India's hopes of levelling the series have been dealt a setback even before the start of the third Test, as Harbhajan Singh, their most experienced bowler, was ruled out due to injury.
Harbhajan had suffered a bout of flu at the start of the tour and had missed the tour game against the Sri Lankan Board President's XI. He had been on and off the field during the first Test in Galle, and did not attend the practice session on the eve of this Test. His participation had been in doubt and he was officially ruled out on Tuesday morning.
India are also without Gautam Gambhir, who hasn't recovered from his knee injury that led him to miss the second Test at the SSC. M Vijay is likely to retain his place as opener and India could opt for Munaf Patel in place of Harbhajan and go in with three seamers. Amit Mishra, the legspinner, is another possible replacement.
