Australia should feel like an international heavyweight again after starting the one-day series against England with two wins to follow their success in the second Twenty20. But despite the sudden reversal in form after the Ashes, they remain in a bruised state. Nathan Hauritz went to hospital for x-rays on the shoulder he hurt while fielding in Hobart, and will have further scans today. Shaun Tait picked up a thigh strain, his second injury in a week, while Michael Hussey (hamstring) and Ricky Ponting (finger) are recovering from serious problems.

Hauritz is unlikely to play in the final five games of the series but is hoping to be ready for the World Cup starting next month. Tait had better news on Saturday when scans showed no new injury, but his health is a huge worry and the latest setback came only a couple of days after he boasted he was "probably the fittest I've been". This was despite him picking up a back strain which ruled him out of the win in Melbourne.

England's problems are more to do with form and, almost certainly, a let-down following their dominant, drought-breaking Ashes win. It was two weeks ago in Sydney that Andrew Strauss and his team-mates got their hands on the urn and celebrated long and hard. They will be back at the SCG on Sunday aiming to regain some much-needed momentum.

Nathan Hauritz's World Cup hopes are hanging by a thread with it confirmed he would undergo surgery after dislocating his right shoulder at Hobart. He now faces a nervous few weeks before finding out whether he'll make the global one-day tournament. However, there was better news for Shaun Tait who has been cleared of serious injury but Mitchell Johnson won't be available for the third ODI against England at the SCG.

Hauritz was helped off the field in severe pain and underwent further scans on Saturday. They revealed 'moderate disruption' to his shoulder and it has been decided surgery is required although the medical staff remain hopeful over his World Cup chances.

"Nathan Hauritz will have arthroscopic surgery of his shoulder joint in Melbourne," Cricket Australia physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said. "This is a small procedure that we hope will give him the best opportunity to be available for the World Cup.

"He will then have a period of intense rehabilitation and attempt to return to training in the coming weeks if we feel this is appropriate. His availability for the World Cup will depend on his progress through this rehabilitation."

Xavier Doherty, the left-arm spinner, had already been called up to Australia's squad for the next two matches against England and would replace Hauritz at the World Cup. At least the hosts have had good news regarding Tait after he left the field five balls into his sixth over at Hobart with pain in his thigh. He hasn't yet been ruled out of Sunday's match at the SCG although it would be a major risk to play him.

"Shaun complained of some left upper thigh pain," Kountouris said. "As a precaution he was advised to stop bowling and leave the field. He had scans this afternoon which have cleared him of any new and significant damage. He will be assessed over the next 12 hours to determine his management and availability for tomorrow's match and the remainder of this series."

Johnson, meanwhile, has recovered from the throat infection which kept him out of the Hobart match but the medical staff don't feel he has had enough time to prepare for Sunday's clash. Peter Siddle, overlooked for the World Cup, has been added to the squad and will link up after playing Saturday's Big Bash match against New South Wales at the MCG.

World Cup preparations for England and Australia are hardly in ideal shape at the moment. The home side are struggling to keep eleven fit cricketers on the park, yet the visitors find themselves 2-0 down in the seven-match series when they could easily have won both games.

In Hobart, England couldn't chase down 231 having twice allowed Australia to recover in their innings. With the tour close to hitting the three-month mark and with the Ashes impressively retained there could be some weary bodies and minds thinking of the journey home as they prepare for the Sydney match on Sunday. But England have said throughout that they want to be the best team in the world in all formats, so have to show they can switch their focus and intensity between different versions.

Ian Bell has been involved in the tour from day one and is now back playing limited-overs cricket alongside his Test role, which means there will be no break for him until after the World Cup which starts next month.

"I think we have let ourselves down a little bit in the two games we've played," Bell said. "There's no point thinking of home because we've only got three days at home. It's a massively important couple of months for us so it's important we get that right.

"We did have a chat last night and hopefully we can put things right now and put in a good performance. I don't think we are far away, but we just haven't quite done the small detail very well. If we can get that right I am sure we'll get back in this series."

England have not been able to field their strongest side during the one-day series with James Anderson back home resting, Stuart Broad out with a stomach injury and Graeme Swann sidelined with a knee problem. Anderson will be available again for the fourth match in Adelaide, on January 26, and, although in the long run the optional or enforced absences may help England's bowlers perform during the World Cup, Bell doesn't think schedules should be an excuse.

"It has been a long trip but you expect that as a cricketer. In international cricket you are going to spend a lot of time away from home, it just comes with the job so you should be used to it. I don't think anyone should be feeling that fatigued really. We've got a big World Cup coming up so we have to get our game right. It starts tomorrow; we have to start playing some good cricket."

While the depth of England's attack has been an issue, the batsmen have been guilty of soft dismissals in the two one-dayers. Bell has twice been caught in the off-side ring - off Steve Smith at the MCG, then when he cut Brett Lee to point in Hobart - but following Andrew Strauss's lead he believes it's important for the batsmen to play with freedom.

"We've had a lot of success in the past 12-18 months in one-day cricket by playing aggressive cricket. We don't want to stop doing that. When you go with the aggressive side of the game you are always going to make the odd mistake."

One change to bolster England's all-round options would be a recall for Paul Collingwood, possibly in place of Jonathan Trott, but he's likely to be given more time on the sidelines to refresh himself. Trott is being tried out in the Collingwood role with the ball, but doesn't have the same variation and skill, which could mean a new balance to England's attack with just one spinner even though Sydney often offers turn.

Australia's selectors have had a difficult summer and they were made to look foolish again when Shaun Marsh hit 110 against England two days after being left out of the World Cup squad. He may yet make the trip because Michael Hussey, the man he has replaced for this series, remains a major doubt due to his hamstring injury.

Marsh made a strong case that he should have been there by right, but his hopes of making the 15-man World Cup party weren't helped with the selectors able to select Tim Paine as a reserve keeper-batsman. Given Australia's batting woes this season, it's difficult to think why Marsh isn't playing a part across all formats. Mickey Arthur, his coach at Western Australia, rates him as talented as any batsman he has coached, although a first-class average 37.97, lower than his ODI mark, doesn't do him any favours

But even though his route to the subcontinent next month rests on the fortunes of others he isn't dwelling on being overlooked. "I'm never one to worry about selections," he said after Australia's 46-run win in Hobart. "I was disappointed not to get picked, but I see these games as an opportunity to improve my game at international level. It's given me a lot of confidence. I'm sure the guys who go over will do a great job."

England were due to face Marsh when they played Australia A, also at Hobart, in November but he pulled out due to injury. Andrew Strauss said they would need to come up with some new ideas. "He had a nice mix of getting ones and hitting boundaries," he said. "He's a player in good form and we'll have to look at how we could have done things differently."

By trade Marsh is opener, like his father Geoff, but his immediate chances for Australia appear to be in the middle order and he showed his adaptability in Hobart when he came in at No. 6 with the score 4 for 33. He added 100 with Cameron White then an unexpected 88 with Doug Bollinger for the ninth wicket to give Australia a defendable total.

"It was just a great opportunity for me," he said. "Huss going down was very unfortunate but it gave me my chance. It didn't matter where I batted for Australia, I just wanted to play. It's obviously different to opening but I knew once I got myself in, and started feeling good, I could play some shots. It was a lot of fun out there especially with Dougie at the end. We got our team to a competitive total and defended it well."

Marsh had plenty of praise for his unlikely tail-end partner. Bollinger had only batted four times in his previous 27 ODIs with a top score of three, but unfurled two cover drives during his run-a-ball 30. "Dougie was loving it out there," Marsh said. "It was a lot of fun. I was trying to tell him to rotate the strike and keep the ball on the ground. He played some wonderful shots, it was fantastic the way he went about it. Without him we probably wouldn't have got to 200."

Although Marsh is unlikely to break the opening combination of Shane Watson and Brad Haddin, Michael Clarke made it fairly clear that he wants to make use of Marsh's impressive form by using him higher up the order. "Shaun will definitely be playing in the next three games," Clarke said. "It's unlikely he'll be batting at No.6 as well, especially when he's hitting the ball as sweet as he is. He's in wonderful nick at the moment. He's certainly going to get opportunities if he plays like that."
