Somerset have signed Steve Kirby from neighbours Gloucestershire on a three-year contract after the quick bowler asked to be released from his Bristol deal to pursue Division One cricket.Kirby still had two years to run at Gloucestershire but wants to make one final push for international honours and believes he can only do that in the top flight. He will certainly add a cutting edge to Somerset's attack which is currently led by the hard-working Charl Willoughby, the former South Africa left-arm paceman, but lacks somebody with pace.
"Somerset are putting together the nucleus of a side who can be contenders in all forms of cricket and I am looking forward to competing for a place because competition is what sport is all about for me," Kirby told the Somerset website. "The club has a great infrastructure as well as a very good team. I can assure their supporters I have plenty of fire left in my belly and I'm looking forward to the challenge of bowling at Taunton.''
Brian Rose, the Somerset director of cricket, added: "I have made it clear for some time that we needed to strengthen our seam bowling unit and Steve will give us a bit of extra pace," he said. "That is a real advantage when you are trying to bowl out tail-enders at a place like Taunton and he has the sort of character too to get among later order batsmen."He is still ambitious to play for England, which means he will be giving it everything next season, and he has always been a very spirited cricketer. The deal was done very quickly. As soon as we heard he was leaving Gloucestershire we went in for him and I pleased to say we soon reached agreement."
Cricket's biggest match-fixing scandal was unearthed in 2000, when Hansie Cronje admitted he had accepted money to throw matches. Soon players from other countries, chiefly India and Pakistan, were implicated, among them Mohammad Azharuddin and Saleem Malik. Since then, allegations of fixing have cropped up sporadically, and it has been acknowledged that bookmakers and the underworld have been active in trying to influence cricket results. In 2010, scandal reared its head again when three leading Pakistan players were questioned by Scotland Yard and suspended by the ICC over spot-fixing charges.
Somerset have strengthened their bowling attack for next season by signing seamer Gemaal Hussain from Gloucestershire on a three-year contract.Hussain, 27, was recruited from club cricket in Derbyshire early in the 2009 season to play for Gloucester and was one of the major surprise-packages of the 2010 season, taking 67 wickets in his first full season of Championship cricket to become the leading wicket-taker in the Second Division. But Hussain rejected Gloucestershire's offer of a new contract earlier this month saying that he wanted to play in the First Division. He was approached by Nottinghamshire and Hampshire but followed his Gloucestershire team-mate Steve Kirby to Taunton.
"Gemaal has had an excellent year and we are delighted to have signed him," said Somerset's director of cricket Brian Rose. "It means that we have got quality and depth in our seam-bowling department."Gloucestershire are suffering a glut of moves with Hussain the fourth to leave following Kirby, former Zimbabwe seamer Anthony Ireland who has joined Middlesex, and batsman Will Porterfield who has joined Warwickshire.

Windward Islands edged to a three-wicket victory against Combined Campuses and Colleges at the Trelawny Stadium despite a middle-order collapse that threatened to undermine a solid opening partnership. The win secured Windward a spot in the semi-finals of the WICB Cup.The Windward openers, Devon Smith and Johnson Charles, added 105 for the first wicket, chasing a target of 203, but the innings lost direction after the stand was broken. CCC's Gilford Moore, who finished with 4 for 41, was instrumental in Windward losing seven wickets for 91 runs. Windward, however, had enough resources to complete victory in the 48th over.
