Johann Myburgh smashed half a dozen sixes in his half-century that boosted Hampshire to a match-winning total against Leeward Islands in Antigua. Myburgh, who shared an opening partnership of 63 in 7.3 overs with Jimmy Adams, scored 76 off 57 balls and batted nearly the whole innings. Hampshire's middle order failed, though, until Benny Howell came to the crease and provided an aggressive finishing touch to the innings, ransacking 29 off 12 balls at the death. They reached a total of 156 for 5, with offspinner Justin Athanaze taking 3 for 24 for Leeward.
Hampshire beat Barbados in a thrilling Super Over after scores were level at the end of the allotted overs in their Group B match at the Sir Viv Richards Stadium in Antigua.
Hampshire won the toss and elected to bat and got off to a solid start after openers Jimmy Adams and Johann Myburgh added 85 runs. However, Wavell Hinds struck in the 14th over to dismiss Myburgh and Adams in quick succession. The Hampshire innings lost momentum after that. Sean Ervine tried to up the ante with a quickfire 32 off 19 balls to carry Hampshire to 136 for 3. Barbados' chase started badly as they lost opener Kirk Edwards and No. 3 Jonathan Carter early. A 42-run partnership between opener Dwayne Smith and Alcindo Holder steadied the innings.
Hampshire, meanwhile, still have an overseas player in legspinner Imran Tahir, but he was recently named in South Africa's 14-man squad to play India in their five-match one-day international series. Although the call-up will not affect his overseas status at Hampshire, he could miss their pre-season if selected in South Africa's World Cup squad in February. The 2011 World Cup is due to start on 19 February and the final 15-man national squad will be selected later this month.
South African fast bowler Friedel de Wet has signed a Kolpak contract with Hampshire for the 2011 County season.
De Wet, 30, played two Tests for South Africa against England in 2009-10, picking up match figures of 5 for 127 on debut in the drawn Centurion Test.
He picked up a stress fracture of the back in the third Test of that series and fell out of national contention, but has remained on the Highveld Lions' books in domestic cricket.
He also has some experience of England conditions as he was signed by Middlesex as a Kolpak player for the 2008 season, playing one game for their second XI before heading to Lancashire for some more second team cricket.
"I'm looking forward to playing on the county circuit in the off season, and would like to thank the bizhub Highveld Lions for their support in this endeavor," said de Wet.
An ankle injury to Chris Gayle and rain aided Windward Islands in their task of upsetting Jamaica at the Trelawny Stadium. Gayle was forced to retire hurt on 0, with Jamaica on 16, and watched as his team lost wickets in their struggle for momentum. He returned with the score on 134 for 4 and blitzed 58 off 38 balls, an innings that included four fours and four sixes. Gayle's strike-rate of 152.63 was the only one greater than 65 in Jamaica's innings and, as a result, the home team was able to post 223 for 5.
