Nathan Hauritz's good form continued as he held a tottering New South Wales together with an aggressive half-century and then picked up two wickets, but it was not enough to prevent a Victorian win as left-handed opener guided his side home with a fluent hundred. NSW struggled against Victoria's seamers after opting to bat first and were bowled out for 225 three balls short of their allotted 45 overs. Wade carried Victoria to the brink with a career-best 105 while Brad Hodge added a rapid half-century as victory was achieved with six overs to spare.James Pattinson, who was the only uncapped player in Australia's preliminary 30-man World Cup squad, did the early damage by removing Usman Khawaja and David Warner early and when Nic Maddinson was run out NSW slipped to 3 for 32. With Phil Jaques falling moments before the mid-innings suspension, Dirk Nannes removed Moises Henriques for 47 and Clint McKay got rid of wicketkeeper Peter Nevill to put the Blues in real trouble at 7 for 127 before Hauritz set about repairing the innings by putting on 93 for the eighth wicket with Steve O'Keefe, who contributed an adventurous 48.
Hauritz, who has been in decent touch with both bat and ball since being discarded by the national side, went to his second List A fifty with five fours before he was caught behind for a 45-ball 51 in the 44th over. Four balls later McKay struck to remove Brett Lee, and the innings came to a swift conclusion when O'Keefe was run out immediately afterwards.Wade and Aaron Finch bettered a NSW attack boasting four men with Test experience to put on 95 for the first wicket and Victoria took an early lead when they reached 1 for 112 in their first 20-over innings. Yes, none will be selected in the test team although Finch is better than Hughes, Smith, Clarke, Khawaja. Wade is a better keeper and Bat than Haddin......But it makes no difference. Victoria smashed England...smashed NSW and probably won't have a representative on the field for the next test. Yes...we are crying foul...and no...we won't get over it. Unfortunately it's not just how well you do on the day, or how well your team is going, that determines whether you'll be a rep player. Wade would have to wait for the keeping slot to open, and then be ahead of Time Paine (who is not from NSW...). Victoria's batsmen would have to start averaging in the 40's to be deemed consistent enough. McKay isn't rated by anyone as far as I know, despite a decent record, but Nannes and Pattinson are in the mix. It's a pity that White failed when he got his Test chance - also a pity he decided to be a batsman and not a bowler or all-rounder, because there has been a search in that area. Also a pity that he's an unsporting captain. Against that, NSW have a number of batsmen averaging 50+ (Hughes, Khawaja, Jaques, Maddinson - pity Jaques and Hughes are out of form) ) plus the two best spinners in Australia at the moment. I'm not surprised NSW have a lot of fringe players.
A 134-run stand between Ed Cowan and George Bailey steered Tasmania to a four-wicket victory over Western Australia and ensured that Test-reject Xavier Doherty's fine spell of 2 for 46 from 12 overs did not go to waste.Cowan stroked 82 at better than a run a ball while Bailey finished unbeaten on 79 to guide his team home with four balls remaining despite a flurry of late wickets.Doherty had opened the bowling after Bailey chose to field first and despite his accuracy the visitors got off to a steady start with Shaun Marsh and Liam Davis. The pair reached 70 before Davis was trapped in front aiming a sweep at offspinner Jason Krejza for 35 but Marsh and Luke Pomersbach ensured further slip-ups before the 20-over suspension.In the second stint Marsh went on to make 52 before becoming the first of two victims for Doherty. Adam Voges contributed a quick-fire half-century, striking seven boundaries in the process but it was a 62-run sixth-wicket stand at the end of the innings that carried the total towards 245.
The brisk opening stand between Mark Cosgrove and Rhett Lockyear was in stark contrast to the approach adopted by Western Australia and ensured the home side were in good shape responding to Western Australia's 20-over score. The openers fell in quick succession, however, just before the break to give the visitors an opening before Cowan and Bailey's steadied the ship.Tasmania needed a further 150 to win when Cowan and Bailey resumed their stand. While neither battered the boundary boards with expansive shots both ran well between the wickets and picked up runs smartly to build a perfect foundation to the victory. Cowan had reached 82 before he offered a catch to Marsh and Travis Birt was run out for 1 an over later. Jonathan Wells kept Bailey company in an important 35-run stand and despite two more wickets, Bailey held firm to give his team victory.
